While Ben's dad, Joe, was visiting a few weekends ago, we visited an environmental building supplier in Lawrenceville called Artemis. We were just sort of generally curious about the place, and we all love a good clever innovation and/or the chance to make fun of hippies (Ben and Joe are from Eugene, OR which gives them license).
It turns out, we might have found a pretty kickin' idea for our countertops!
Paperstone is this crazy material made from layers and layers and layers of recycled paper held together by resin that gives it a stone-like feel. It has the look and practicality of honed granite or even soapstone, but is (1) way cheaper (2) way easier to work with and (3) a sustainable, renewable, small-company-manufactured, environmentally-sound, high-fiber, smugly morally superior, boast-inducing product. And who doesn't love that?

Those counters are very classy! You can't beat the ecological impact with any other new material, either. Are you going to do the built in dish drainer?
Sweet! Do they work for bathroom counters as well?
Also a possibility for our future wet bar downstairs.
Thanks for the comment on our blog...we've actually made even more progress now, but have been so busy moving in that we haven't had time to post. And we haven't had internet at home.
I like the paperstone idea, I was looking at them when I thought we had enough funds to redo the kitchen this year. Oh well, we'll just have to be content with our very limited wood laminate counter space for now :)
Ooooohhh girl, I love it! I haven't heard of that stuff yet. I wonder if it's available in WI..... I'm also wondering if it can handle a hot pan. That's one thing I was hoping to get in a new kitchen - the ability to plop a hot pot or pan on the counter without any protection.

I haven't heard of that, either. I wonder if they have those countertops in MI... super idea!
PaperStone is definitely growing in popularity, plus it does something great for our environment. I enjoyed your post very much.
I have seen many people using paperstone for their home and office furniture because it is in trend and useful also. It makes very qualitative furniture with classic look.
